Have you ever tried to find something on a webpage, but couldn’t for the sake of graphics, buttons, links and other clutter? This usually leaves us screaming, “where is the whitespace?” Whitespace is literally empty space. And unlike its name suggests, whitespace doesn’t have to actually be white.
But, when used appropriately, whitespace can bring simplicity to the complexity of your webpages (and other communications collateral), meanwhile, emphasizing your most important element - your content.
It’s simple. Simplify the complexity of design by keeping colour schemes and other design elements minimal and reflective of the tone and brand you want to convey.
This is the same advice we give when it comes to communicating your message in general – whether it’s speaking, writing or illustrating – keep it simple and don’t forget about the white stuff. It is as important to communicate a simple message as it is a complex one. So write, then re-write. Next, refine your message and emancipate it from unnecessary, frivolous or convoluted words. The more you can say in less – be it by words or design – the greater impact you will have. Less is more. Ask yourself, where’s the whitepsace?
